Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bahirah: A she-camel whose ear was slit after she gave birth to a certain number of times, after which she was set free for their idols and forbidden from use.
- Sa'ibah: A camel that was left free for their idols after reaching a certain age or due to a vow, and was no longer ridden or milked.
- Wasilah: A sheep or goat that, if it gave birth to a male and a female in consecutive births, was considered to have "connected" its siblings and was therefore spared from slaughter for their idols.
- Hami: A male camel that, after siring a certain number of offspring, was declared "protected" and forbidden from being ridden or used for work.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has made all cattle lawful for His servants to benefit from—whether for riding, milking, or consumption. He never legislated these superstitious practices that the pagans of Arabia invented and attributed to Him. These were purely human fabrications: the Bahirah, the Sa'ibah, the Wasilah, and the Hami—all of which were customs rooted in idol worship and false reverence for their deities.
Yet, those who disbelieved not only invented these prohibitions but also falsely claimed that Allah Himself had commanded them. They ascribed their own lies to the Creator, seeking to give their innovations a divine seal. However, the truth is that Allah has not forbidden any of these animals; rather, He has made them lawful and pure for mankind.
The verse then concludes with a profound observation: most of these disbelievers do not use their intellect. They blindly follow their forefathers and leaders without reflecting on what is truly right or wrong, lawful or unlawful. Their minds, though capable of reason, are clouded by ignorance and blind imitation.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every human being to pause and reflect: How often do we accept traditions or practices simply because "everyone does them" or "our ancestors did them"? Islam came to liberate the mind and soul from such blind conformity. It calls us to use our God-given intellect to distinguish truth from falsehood, and to submit only to what Allah has clearly legislated—a religion of ease, purity, and wisdom.
Allah has not burdened us with arbitrary restrictions; He has made His religion a path of balance and mercy. So, let us embrace the pure teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and free ourselves from every innovation and superstition that contradicts them. In doing so, we honor our intellect, worship Allah with clarity, and find true peace in His guidance.
