- Tahīd (تَحِيدُ): To swerve, turn aside, or flee from something; to try to avoid or evade it.
Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:
When the final moment arrives, the agony and stupor of death come upon a person with the undeniable truth — the truth that every soul must taste death, and there is no escape from it. This is the moment when all illusions of power, wealth, and worldly security vanish, and the reality of one’s deeds stands before them. The verse addresses every human being directly: "This is what you used to flee from and try to avoid!" You spent your life turning away from the thought of death, distracting yourself with worldly pursuits, and refusing to prepare for this inevitable meeting with your Lord.
The "truth" here refers to the certainty of death itself — a reality that no one can bargain with, postpone, or evade. It is the ultimate proof that this worldly life is temporary and that the Hereafter is the true, everlasting abode. At this moment, the veil is lifted, and the soul sees clearly what it once denied or neglected.
This verse serves as a profound reminder for every believer: do not wait until the stupor of death overtakes you to awaken. The one who reflects on this reality will hasten to repentance, good deeds, and sincere devotion to Allah, for death is not an end but a passage to an eternal life where every soul will be recompensed for what it earned.
O dear reader! Let this verse stir your heart today. The death you try to forget will surely come — but the wise one is he who remembers it often and prepares for it with faith and righteousness. Do not be among those who flee from the truth, but be among those who embrace it now, before the moment when fleeing is no longer possible. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this life as a precious opportunity — seize it with gratitude, obedience, and love for your Creator, and you will find that the agony of death becomes a gentle transition to eternal bliss, not a terrifying end.
