Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Khatbukum (خَطْبُكُمْ): Your matter, affair, or the important mission you have come for. It refers to a significant and weighty matter.

Tafsir (Interpretation):

After Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) saw the angels in the form of honorable guests, and after they declined to eat the calf he had prepared for them, he felt a sense of unease. However, when they gave him the glad tidings of a son (Ishaq) and his wife Sarah laughed in amazement, and when they clarified their true identity as angels sent by Allah, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) then asked them: "What is your important matter, O messengers?" — meaning, what is the great mission for which you have been sent? What is the serious affair that has brought you here?

The word *khatb* denotes a matter of great significance and gravity. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) understood that these noble messengers were not sent merely for the good news of a son, but that there was a greater purpose behind their visit. So he inquired about it, and they answered: "Indeed, we have been sent to a people who are criminals — the people of Lut — to destroy them with stones of baked clay, marked by your Lord for the transgressors who exceeded all bounds in sin and disobedience."

This exchange reflects the beautiful character of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) — his hospitality, his wisdom, and his deep concern for the affairs of Allah's creation. It also shows the honor Allah bestowed upon him by sending angels who spoke to him directly and shared with him the divine decree.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding the purpose behind events. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not remain silent; he asked about the mission of the angels. As believers, we too should be people who seek clarity and understanding in our faith. Moreover, this verse reminds us of the reality of divine justice — that Allah does not overlook the crimes of the wicked, and that His messengers are always at work, executing His will with precision and wisdom. Let this strengthen our trust in Allah's plan and our hope in His mercy, while also instilling in us a healthy fear of His punishment for those who persist in wrongdoing. Indeed, the Qur'an is a living guidance that connects us to the stories of the prophets and the unseen realities of the angelic world, drawing us closer to our Creator with every verse we ponder.
