Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qawm mujrimin — a people who have committed grave sins and crimes; "mujrimin" refers to those who persist in major transgressions, particularly crimes against the natural order and divine commands.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked the angels about their mission and the purpose of their visit, they replied: "Indeed, we have been sent to a people who are criminals." These were the people of Prophet Lut (Lot) — a community that had sunk into abominable sins, exceeding all bounds in their wickedness and rebellion against Allah. Their crime was not a minor slip but a persistent, shameless violation of divine law, which had reached such a level that it warranted divine punishment.

The angels clarified that their mission was not arbitrary or vengeful; rather, it was a decree from Allah, the All-Wise, who had given this people ample time and warnings through His Prophet Lut. Yet they persisted in their transgression, refusing to reform. Thus, the angels were sent to execute the divine judgment upon them — a punishment that would serve as a lesson for all of humanity.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that Allah's justice is precise and His mercy is vast, but His punishment is severe for those who persist in evil after receiving clear guidance. The people of Lut were not destroyed without warning — they had a prophet among them, calling them to goodness, yet they mocked and rejected him.

Dear reader, this story is not merely history; it is a mirror for our own lives. Every one of us faces moments where we choose between right and wrong, between obedience and transgression. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the Qur'an and the example of His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as our guides. He does not hasten to punish — He gives us time to repent, to turn back to Him, and to seek His forgiveness.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own actions. If you find yourself falling into sin, know that the door of repentance is always open. Allah says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53). But also remember that His justice is real — do not take His patience as a sign of neglect. Strive to be among those who hear the call of truth and respond with sincerity, for the best of people are those who purify themselves and draw closer to their Lord. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the fate of the criminals.
