Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ظَلَمُوا (dhalamoo): Those who wronged themselves through disbelief (kufr) and acts of disobedience.
  • دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ (doona dhalik): Before that (i.e., before the great punishment of the Day of Judgment); a punishment that is less than the ultimate one, yet still severe.
  • عَذَابًا (ʿadhaban): A painful torment or punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified be He) informs us that those who commit wrongdoing—especially the grave sin of disbelief and persistent transgression—will not escape punishment in this world before facing the even greater torment of the Hereafter. The verse declares: "And indeed, for those who have wronged, there is a punishment before that"—meaning they will taste a portion of divine retribution in this very life, whether through defeat, captivity, calamities, or the torment of the grave (barzakh), all of which serve as a foretaste of what awaits them on the Day of Resurrection.

This was vividly realized when the polytheists of Quraysh faced humiliation and loss at the Battle of Badr, and it continues to manifest in the lives of oppressors throughout history—Allah's justice never fails. Yet, the verse concludes with a striking truth: "but most of them do not know." They remain heedless, blind to the signs of divine punishment unfolding around them, and thus persist in their arrogance and disbelief.

This verse carries a powerful lesson for us all. It reminds us that Allah's justice is swift and certain—no wrongdoer escapes accountability, whether in this world or the next. For the believer, this is a source of immense comfort and reassurance: when we see oppression and injustice prevailing, we can rest assured that Allah sees all and will not let it go unpunished. It also serves as a wake-up call to those who may be drifting into sin—repent before the punishment arrives, for Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is equally real. The door of repentance remains open, and turning back to Allah is always better than facing His wrath. Let this verse strengthen your faith in divine justice and inspire you to be among those who know, reflect, and act righteously.

📜 Verse 45-49 — At-Tur

So leave them until they meet their Day in which they will be struck insensible -
The Day their plan will not avail them at all, nor will they be helped.
And indeed, for those who have wronged is a punishment before that, but most of them do not know.
And be patient, [O Muhammad], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes. And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord when you arise.
And in a part of the night exalt Him and after [the setting of] the stars.
