Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • An-Najm (النَّجْمِ): The star, a general term encompassing all stars in the sky.
  • Hawā (هَوَىٰ): It fell, descended, or set — meaning it sank below the horizon and disappeared from sight.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Almighty, opens this noble chapter with a solemn oath: "By the star when it falls." This is a divine swearing by one of His magnificent creations — the stars that adorn the heavens and guide travelers through the darkness of land and sea. When the star descends from its lofty position and sets, it demonstrates the perfect order and submission of all creation to its Creator. Nothing in the universe moves or rests except by His command and will.

The purpose of this oath is to draw attention to something even greater and more significant: the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the divine origin of what he conveys. Just as the star is a source of light and guidance in the physical world, so too is the Prophet a source of light and guidance for humanity in the spiritual realm. The oath establishes that what follows — the revelation and the Prophet's message — is absolutely true and certain.

This verse sets the stage for the powerful declarations that come after it, affirming that the Prophet (peace be upon him) does not speak from personal desire, but rather from pure revelation sent down by Allah. The swearing by the star when it sets is a beautiful reminder that just as the star disappears from sight only to rise again, the truth of Islam shines brightly and can never be extinguished.

Reflection and Da'wah:

Dear reader, reflect on the magnificence of this divine oath. The Creator of the heavens and the earth swears by His creation to affirm the truth of His message. This demonstrates how greatly Allah values the guidance He has sent to humanity through His final Messenger. When you look up at the night sky and witness the stars falling and setting, let it remind you of the certainty of Allah's promises and the truthfulness of His revelation. The same Allah who controls the stars in their courses has guaranteed the preservation of His Book and the triumph of His religion. Open your heart to this divine message, for it is the path to true success in this life and the Hereafter.
