Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyāt (آيَاتِ): Signs, wonders, or miraculous evidences.
- Al-Kubrā (الْكُبْرَى): The greatest, the most magnificent, the supreme.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse concludes the description of the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) extraordinary journey during the Night of Ascension (Al-Isrā’ wal-Mi‘rāj). After mentioning that his sight neither wavered nor transgressed, Allah confirms: "Indeed, he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was granted a unique honor—to witness realities that no human eye had ever seen before. He saw the Angel Jibrīl (Gabriel) in his true, magnificent form, a sight of overwhelming grandeur. He also beheld the wonders of the heavens, the bliss of Paradise, the torment of Hellfire, and other supreme signs that testify to Allah’s infinite power, wisdom, and majesty. These were not mere dreams or illusions; they were true, certain visions granted by Allah to His beloved Messenger as a confirmation of his prophethood and a source of strength for his mission.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah, in His mercy, sometimes unveils glimpses of the unseen to those He loves, not to overwhelm them, but to anchor their faith with certainty. The Prophet’s experience reminds us that the unseen world is real, that Paradise and Hell are true, and that every sign in creation points to the greatness of its Creator.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Imagine standing at the edge of the universe, witnessing the very realities that await us after death—the gardens of delight and the fires of warning. This is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw, and he returned to tell us, not to frighten us, but to invite us to a life of purpose, faith, and righteousness. If the greatest of Allah’s signs were shown to the most truthful of messengers, then how much more should we strive to believe in what he conveyed? Let this verse awaken in your heart a longing for Paradise and a sincere fear of Hell, and let it strengthen your trust in the One who created all things. The Prophet saw these signs so that you, too, may live with certainty—and that certainty is the greatest treasure a heart can hold. Embrace it, and let it transform your life into a journey toward Allah’s pleasure.
