Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aad (عاد): The ancient tribe of Prophet Hud (peace be upon him), known for their immense physical strength and advanced civilization.
- Al-Ula (الأولى): "The First" — referring to the original, earlier generation of the tribe of Aad, as opposed to a later group also called Aad (Thamud is sometimes referred to as "Aad the latter" in some readings).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) reminds us of His absolute power and justice by pointing to the fate of the first people of Aad — the tribe of Prophet Hud (peace be upon him). These were a people of extraordinary might and grandeur, who built towering structures and lived in prosperity, yet they rejected the message of monotheism and persisted in their arrogance and disbelief. When they defiantly refused to submit to Allah and mocked His prophet, Allah destroyed them completely with a furious, freezing wind that raged upon them for seven nights and eight days — leaving them lifeless, like hollow trunks of palm trees. Not a single one of them survived to tell the tale.
This destruction was not merely a random calamity; it was a decisive act of divine justice. The verse comes in the context of listing Allah's mighty deeds — His creation, His control over the heavens and the earth, and His punishment of past nations who transgressed. It serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how strong, wealthy, or advanced a people may become, they are never beyond Allah's reach. The power of Aad, which they boasted about, could not protect them from the command of their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: if the mighty Aad — with their towering buildings, their physical prowess, and their advanced civilization — could not escape Allah's punishment when they turned away from Him, then what makes us think we can? This verse is not just history; it is a living lesson for every generation. It calls us to humility, to recognize our utter dependence on Allah, and to submit to Him before it is too late.
The Qur'an repeatedly presents these stories not to frighten us aimlessly, but to awaken our hearts. If we learn from the past, we can secure our future — both in this world and the Hereafter. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the moment of death. So turn to Him now, with a sincere heart, and be among those who are saved — not among those who are destroyed. Let the fate of Aad be a beacon of warning, and let the promise of Allah's mercy be a beacon of hope. Indeed, in these stories are signs for those who reflect.
