Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Thamud: The people of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), who lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr between Hijaz and Tabuk.
- Fa mā abqā: "So He did not leave [any of them]" — meaning Allah destroyed them entirely, leaving no survivor.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) continues to enumerate His mighty signs and the fate of those who rejected His messengers. After mentioning the destruction of 'Ad, the people of Prophet Hud, Allah turns to the second nation: Thamud, the people of Prophet Salih. They were given a miraculous she-camel as a sign from Allah, yet they arrogantly denied the truth, hamstrung the camel, and persisted in their transgression. So Allah seized them with a mighty blast (the Sayhah) that struck their hearts, and He did not spare a single one of them — not a soul remained to tell the tale. Their homes, their fortresses, their wealth, and their power availed them nothing against the decree of their Lord. This destruction was absolute and final, leaving no trace of their existence as a living community.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that no matter how strong, wealthy, or advanced a people may become, they are utterly powerless before the will of Allah. The fate of Thamud is not merely a historical anecdote; it is a living lesson for every generation that dares to challenge the commands of its Creator. Their story echoes through time, warning us that arrogance and rejection of divine guidance lead only to ruin.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: if these mighty nations — with their carved mountains, their engineering marvels, and their numbers — could not escape Allah's punishment, then who are we to feel secure? The Quran presents these stories not to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts. It invites us to turn back to Allah in repentance before it is too late. The same Allah who destroyed Thamud is the One who opens the doors of mercy to those who seek Him sincerely. He says in His Book: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins'" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So let the destruction of Thamud be a motivation to strengthen your faith, to hold fast to the rope of Allah, and to live a life of obedience — for the Hereafter is far better and more enduring than any fleeting glory of this world.
