Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ash-Shi'ra (الشِّعْرَى): A bright, well-known star (Sirius) in the sky. It was worshipped by some Arab tribes during the pre-Islamic era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), particularly the tribes of Khuzā'ah and Quraysh.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse declares a profound truth: Allah alone is the Lord of Ash-Shi'ra, the brilliant star that some people in the days of ignorance used to worship instead of Allah. They would bow down to this celestial body, seeking benefit or protection from it, unaware that this star—like all creation—is a mere servant of Allah, utterly dependent on His command. It has no power to harm, benefit, grant life, or cause death. Allah, the Exalted, is its Creator, its Sustainer, its Manager, and its ultimate Owner. He set it in its course, gave it its light, and controls its movement and existence at every moment.
This verse comes in a sequence of divine reminders about Allah's absolute lordship over all things—from the smallest to the greatest. After mentioning His creation of all pairs, His giving of wealth, His control over the Hereafter, and His power over laughter and tears, Allah now points to this star as yet another sign of His supreme authority. If even this luminous celestial body that people once revered is under Allah's dominion, then how foolish is it to worship anything other than Him? Every star, every planet, every galaxy—all are subject to His will, glorifying Him and obeying His laws.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this: the very star that some once worshipped is itself a worshipper of Allah. It shines by His permission, moves by His decree, and will one day be extinguished by His command. So where does that leave those who bow to creation instead of the Creator? This verse invites you to lift your heart above all false objects of worship—whether they be stars, stones, statues, wealth, or desires—and direct your devotion solely to the One who truly deserves it. Allah is the Lord of everything, and He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. He calls you to Him not because He needs your worship, but because He loves you and wants to grant you peace, guidance, and eternal success. Answer His call today, and you will find a Lord who never abandons you, a Protector who never sleeps, and a Provider whose treasures never run out.
