Word Meanings:

  • Su'ur (سُعُر): Madness or insanity, and it is also said to mean burning fire or being consumed by something harmful.
  • Dalal (ضَلال): Going astray, error, or deviation from the right path.

Explanation of the Verse:

The people of Thamud, to whom the Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was sent, rejected the clear signs and miracles that were shown to them. Instead of reflecting on the truth, they responded with arrogance and mockery, saying: "Shall we follow a single human being from among us? We are a large community, and he is just one man like us—not a king, not an angel, not someone of elevated status. If we were to follow him, we would surely be in clear error and madness." They considered it utterly unreasonable that one ordinary person would call them to worship Allah alone and to abandon the idols of their forefathers. Their pride blinded them, and they equated obedience to the truth with foolishness, not realizing that the greatest wisdom lies in submitting to the Creator of all.

Reflection and Call to Faith:

How often do we reject the truth simply because it comes from someone we consider "ordinary" or because following it would require humility? The people of Thamud looked at the Messenger with the eyes of arrogance, measuring his worth by worldly standards—wealth, status, and numbers—rather than by the truth he carried. Yet Allah chose His prophets from among humans precisely so that we can relate to them, learn from them, and see that guidance is not about privilege but about sincerity and divine selection. When you encounter the message of Islam, do not ask, "Who is delivering it?" but rather, "Is it the truth?" The Qur'an itself challenges us to reflect: if a person speaks with wisdom and calls to goodness, why should we turn away due to pride? Embrace the truth wherever it comes from, for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Wisdom is the lost property of the believer—wherever he finds it, he is most deserving of it." Let this verse be a reminder to lower our egos, open our hearts, and measure people and messages by their alignment with Allah's guidance, not by their worldly appearance. Indeed, the one who follows the truth, even if alone, is on the straight path, while the one who rejects it, even with a multitude behind him, is in loss.
