Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Thamud: A mighty Arab tribe that lived in the rocky dwellings of Al-Hijr, between Hijaz and Tabuk. They were the successors of the 'Ad people in power and wealth.
- Bil-Nudhur: The warnings and admonitions brought by their Messenger Salih (peace be upon him), which included the miraculous she-camel as a sign and the threat of punishment if they persisted in disbelief.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The people of Thamud, the successors of 'Ad in strength and civilization, rejected the warnings delivered to them by their Prophet Salih (peace be upon him). They did not merely deny the message itself—they dismissed the entire concept of divine warning, treating the signs and miracles shown to them as fabrications or mere sorcery. Their arrogance led them to ask: "Shall we follow a single human being from among us? Then we would surely be in error and madness!" They deemed it beneath their dignity to submit to a mortal like themselves, failing to recognize that prophethood is a divine choice, not a matter of social status or tribal prestige. Their rejection was not born of ignorance but of stubborn pride, as they had witnessed the she-camel emerge from the rock as a clear sign, yet they still chose to disbelieve.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul that hears the call of truth. The Thamud were given wonders that defy human explanation, yet their hearts remained sealed by arrogance. How often do we, too, receive clear signs in our lives—answered prayers, guidance in moments of darkness, the beauty of creation—and still turn away? The tragedy of Thamud was not their lack of evidence, but their refusal to submit. Let this be a gentle reminder that faith is not a burden but a mercy; it is the key that unlocks peace in this life and success in the next. The same God who destroyed Thamud for their pride is the Most Merciful who opens His doors to those who humble themselves. Do not let your status, your intellect, or your desires become a barrier between you and your Creator. The warnings of the Qur'an are not threats—they are invitations to save yourself before it is too late. Embrace the truth today, and you will find a light that no darkness can extinguish.
