Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الْجَمْعُ (al-jam‘) – The gathered host or multitude; here, it refers to the assembled forces of the disbelievers of Quraysh.
  • يُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ (yuwallūna ad-dubur) – Literally, "they will turn their backs"; meaning they will flee in defeat, turning away from the battlefield.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a decisive prophecy and a divine promise of victory for the believers over the forces of falsehood. Allah Almighty declares that the gathered host of the disbelievers—who once boasted of their strength and numbers—will be utterly defeated and will turn their backs in retreat, fleeing in humiliation before the believers.

This was not merely a future prediction; it was a reality that unfolded at the Battle of Badr, the first major confrontation between the Muslims and the Quraysh. On that day, Abu Jahl, the arrogant leader of the disbelievers, had arrogantly proclaimed, "We are a victorious host." Yet Allah responded to his boast by revealing this very verse, affirming that His help would come to His Messenger and that the combined forces of polytheism would be scattered and routed. Indeed, the Muslims, though few in number and meager in equipment, were granted a decisive victory by Allah’s power, and the leaders of disbelief fell, their ranks broken and their pride shattered.

This verse carries a timeless lesson: no matter how great the numbers, wealth, or might of those who oppose the truth, their strength is but a fleeting illusion when set against the will of Allah. Victory belongs to Allah and His faithful servants, and the end of every tyrant and oppressor is defeat and disgrace.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this divine promise. The Muslims of that time were a small, persecuted community, yet Allah assured them of triumph over a powerful, well-armed enemy—and His word never fails. This is a source of immense hope and strength for every believer facing trials today. When you stand firm upon the truth, trusting in Allah, know that He is your Protector and Helper. He who humbled the mighty hosts of Quraysh is the same Lord who hears your prayers and sees your struggles. So hold fast to faith, for the promise of Allah is true: the gathering of falsehood, however intimidating it may appear, will inevitably scatter and flee, while the light of truth will shine forever. Let this verse fill your heart with courage and certainty, and let it draw you closer to the One who grants victory to His sincere servants.
