Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الساعة (As-Sa'ah): The Hour — the Day of Resurrection and Judgment.
- موعدهم (Maw'iduhum): Their appointed time — the promised moment of their reckoning and punishment.
- أدهى (Adha): More calamitous, more disastrous, far greater in severity and horror.
- أمر (Amarr): More bitter and painful — intensely severe in its agony and torment.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the disbelievers of Quraysh mocked the Prophet (peace be upon him) and demanded to see the punishment they were warned about, Allah responds to their arrogance and denial. He clarifies that their true punishment is not merely what they witnessed or will witness in this world — such as their defeat at the Battle of Badr — but rather, the Hour is their real appointed time. That is the moment when they will face the full, ultimate recompense for their disbelief and crimes.
The verse emphasizes that the punishment of the Hereafter is far greater and more bitter than anything they suffered in this worldly life. The horrors of that Day — the terror of the resurrection, the severity of the reckoning, the torment of Hellfire — are incomparably more severe than being killed or captured in battle. What they tasted at Badr was merely a glimpse, a foretaste, while the true and everlasting punishment awaits them on the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul: the trials and punishments of this world, no matter how severe, are temporary and limited. But the reality of the Hereafter is eternal and infinitely more consequential. How foolish then is the one who lives heedless of that inevitable appointment, trading an everlasting bliss for a fleeting pleasure, or exchanging a permanent punishment for a momentary desire!
Dear reader, the Hour is not a distant myth — it is a certainty that draws nearer with every passing breath. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent us warnings through His messengers and His Book, so that we may awaken before it is too late. Let this verse be a call to turn back to your Lord, to seek His forgiveness, and to prepare for that Day when every soul will be recompensed for what it has earned. The wise one is he who takes heed now, while the door of repentance is still open, and before the Hour arrives — for on that Day, no excuse will avail, and no return will be possible.
