Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Ālā’): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
(Rabbikumā): Your Lord — addressed to both mankind and jinn.
(Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a powerful rhetorical question addressed to both humans and jinn — the two creations endowed with intellect and responsibility. Allah asks: "So which of the blessings of your Lord do you both deny?"

The question is not seeking an answer, but rather it is a profound reminder that leaves the listener speechless. It challenges the very notion of ingratitude. When you consider the sheer number of blessings that Allah has bestowed upon you — the air you breathe, the water you drink, the earth that sustains you, the health you enjoy, the faith He has guided you to — how could any rational being deny even one of them?

This verse comes as a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, appearing after each mention of Allah's favors. It serves as a rhythmic pause that forces reflection: after every blessing mentioned, the listener is asked — "Which of these can you deny?" The answer is always the same: none.

The address to "both of you" (thaqalān — the two weighty creations) emphasizes that both humans and jinn are equally recipients of Allah's mercy and equally accountable for their gratitude. Neither species can claim ignorance of Allah's favors, for they are manifest in every corner of existence.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause for a moment and count the blessings around you. Your heartbeat that continues without your command, your eyes that see, your ears that hear, your tongue that speaks — all are miracles you did not create and cannot fully control. Above all, the greatest blessing is Islam itself — the guidance that leads you to eternal success.

This verse invites you to a beautiful realization: that your Lord, in His infinite mercy, has showered you with blessings beyond counting. The appropriate response is not denial, but gratitude, love, and obedience. When you recognize the generosity of your Creator, your heart naturally fills with humility and your tongue with praise.

Let this verse be a mirror for your soul: if you are grateful, you will be increased in blessings; if you deny, you only harm yourself. Choose gratitude, and let your life be a living testimony to the countless favors of your Lord.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Ar-Rahman

He released the two seas, meeting [side by side];
Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
From both of them emerge pearl and coral.
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
