Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Barzakh (بَرْزَخٌ): A barrier, partition, or isthmus that separates two things and prevents them from mixing or transgressing against each other.
  • Lā Yabghiyān (لَا يَبْغِيَانِ): They do not transgress, overstep, or encroach upon one another. It means neither of the two waters overpowers or corrupts the other.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His infinite wisdom and power, has created two types of seas: one fresh and sweet, and the other salty and bitter. They meet at certain points along coastlines and estuaries, yet between them stands a divine barrier—a *barzakh*—that prevents either from overwhelming the other. This barrier is not necessarily a physical wall that separates them completely, but rather a manifestation of Allah’s decree that maintains the distinct properties of each water body. The fresh water remains fresh, and the salty water remains salty, even when they flow into one another. Neither transgresses its bounds, nor does one destroy the unique characteristics of the other. This is a sign of Allah’s perfect order and balance in creation, showing that He alone sustains the harmony of the universe.

This verse also carries a profound spiritual lesson. Just as Allah placed a barrier between the two seas to maintain peace and balance, He has placed boundaries in our lives—between good and evil, between the permissible and the forbidden. The believer is called to respect these divine limits, not to transgress them, and to live in harmony with Allah’s laws. Moreover, the fact that two seemingly opposing elements—fresh and salt water—can coexist without conflict is a testament to Allah’s mercy and His ability to unite what appears incompatible. It invites us to reflect on the greatness of the Creator, who manages all affairs with precision, and to trust in His wisdom in all matters of life.

Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder of Allah’s power and care for His creation. When you see the meeting of rivers and seas, remember that the One who keeps them in balance is the same One who watches over you, who knows your struggles, and who has set boundaries for your own good. Islam is not a religion of chaos, but of order and mercy. By following the guidance of the Qur’an, you align yourself with the natural harmony that Allah has placed in the universe. Embrace this truth, and let it draw you closer to the Creator who has made everything in perfect measure—so that you, too, may live a life of balance, peace, and purpose.
