Word Meanings:
- Al-Hameem (الحميم): Water that has been heated to an extreme, unbearable degree of boiling heat.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the vivid description of the fate of the misguided and the deniers of the truth. After they have been compelled by their intense hunger to eat from the bitter, foul tree of Zaqqum — filling their bellies with it out of sheer desperation — the scene moves to their unbearable thirst. The verse tells us that upon this, they will drink from Al-Hameem: scalding, boiling water that has reached the utmost limit of heat. This water does not quench their thirst; rather, it intensifies their agony, burning their insides as it goes down. The Qur'an elsewhere describes this water as one that "will sever their intestines" (Muhammad: 15), showing that even their desperate attempt to relieve their thirst only adds to their torment. They drink it in great gulps, like camels suffering from a disease that makes them drink endlessly without ever being satisfied — a powerful image of futile desperation.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is not merely a description of a distant punishment; it is a wake-up call to every soul. It paints a picture so vivid that the heart can almost feel the heat and the choking desperation. But the door of mercy is wide open — right now, in this life. The same tongue that could be used to drink that boiling water in the Hereafter can today be used to recite the Qur'an, to make du'a, and to seek forgiveness. The same stomach that would be filled with Zaqqum can today be nourished with halal sustenance and purified by fasting. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us so that we may turn back. He does not wish to punish anyone; He wishes for us to succeed. Let this verse be a reason for you to thank Allah for the cool water you drink today, and to ask Him to save you from the heat of that Day. And know that the path to safety is simple: believe in Him, follow His Messenger ﷺ, and strive to do good. The choice is yours — and it is made now, before that Day arrives.
