Word Meanings:

  • Ashab al-Yameen (أصحاب اليمين): The people of the right hand — those who receive their Book of Deeds in their right hand on the Day of Judgment, signifying their success and salvation. They are the blessed companions of the right side.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the detailed description of the three categories of people on the Day of Judgment — the foremost (the forerunners), the people of the right hand, and the people of the left hand. After describing the honor and reward of the foremost, Allah now turns to the second group: the people of the right hand.

The verse states: "And if he [the dying person] is of the people of the right hand..." — meaning, if the one whose soul is being taken at the moment of death belongs to the companions of the right, then his fate is one of complete peace and security. The following verse (91) completes the picture by saying that such a person is greeted with the words: "Peace be upon you, for you are of the people of the right hand."

This is a profound and comforting message. The people of the right hand are those who lived their lives in obedience to Allah, followed His commands, avoided major sins, and strove to do good. They are not necessarily at the highest rank of the forerunners, but they are firmly on the path of success. At the moment of death, when the soul departs from the body, they are not met with fear or anguish — rather, they are met with a greeting of peace and safety from the angels, reassuring them that they have nothing to fear.

The beauty of this verse lies in its gentle, reassuring tone. It teaches us that the mercy of Allah is vast and encompasses all those who sincerely strive to do good, regardless of the level of their deeds. Even if one is not among the absolute foremost in faith and devotion, simply being among the people of the right — those who lived righteously and died upon faith — guarantees a peaceful transition and a joyful hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse fills the heart with hope and tranquility. It tells us that the door of salvation is open to all who choose the path of righteousness. You do not need to be perfect; you simply need to be sincere in your faith, steadfast in your prayers, honest in your dealings, and kind in your character. The people of the right hand are ordinary people who made an extraordinary choice — to live for Allah and to die upon His path.

So, let this verse inspire you to examine your own life. Are you among those who will be greeted with peace at the moment of death? The choice is yours, and the time is now. Turn to your Lord, seek His forgiveness, and strive to be among the people of the right. For their end is peace, their greeting is peace, and their eternal abode is the Gardens of Delight — a reward beyond anything this world can offer. May Allah make us all among the people of the right hand.
