Explanation of the Verse:
The polytheists of Arabia had devised their own set of laws regarding cattle, claiming divine authority for them. They declared that whatever is in the wombs of these particular animals — the ones they had dedicated as *sa’ibah* (set free for their idols) and *bahirah* (whose ears were slit) — is reserved exclusively for their males. If a female offspring was born alive, it was forbidden for their women; only men could eat it. However, if the offspring was born dead, then both men and women could share it — a convenient exception driven by their own desires, not by any divine command.
This was a pure fabrication against Allah, a distortion of His lawful and unlawful. They attributed their own whims to divine legislation, showing how far human arrogance can go when it replaces God’s law with its own inventions. The verse then delivers a stern warning: Allah will certainly repay them for the lies they spread about Him. He is *Hakīm* (All-Wise) — His justice is perfect, and His punishment fits the crime. He is *‘Alīm* (All-Knowing) — nothing of their schemes, words, or hidden intentions escapes His knowledge.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse is a timeless lesson for humanity: no one has the right to declare something lawful or unlawful except Allah, the Creator and Lawgiver. When people begin to legislate according to their own desires — whether in matters of food, worship, or daily life — they fall into the same trap as these polytheists. The beauty of Islam is that it frees us from this chaos. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us a complete and perfect guidance through the Qur’an and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ. It is a guidance that protects human dignity, honors women, and establishes justice. When we submit to Allah’s law, we find peace, because we know that the One who created us knows what is best for us. Let this verse inspire you to reflect: are you following Allah’s commands, or are you following your own desires? The choice is yours — and the reward for sincere obedience is immense, while the consequence of fabrication is severe. Allah is indeed All-Wise and All-Knowing, and His promise is true.
