Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Safahan (سَفَهًا): Foolishness, ignorance, and lack of sound judgment.
- Iftira’an (افْتِرَاءً): Fabricating lies and attributing false statements to Allah.
- Khasira (خَسِرَ): Suffered loss, ruin, and utter failure.
- Dallu (ضَلُّوا): Went astray from the path of truth and guidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the profound loss and ruin of those who committed two grave sins: killing their own children out of sheer foolishness and ignorance, without any valid knowledge or justification, and then unlawfully declaring as forbidden the provisions that Allah had graciously bestowed upon them—such as the Bahirah, Sa’ibah, Wasilah, and Hami (specific types of cattle that the pagans of Arabia dedicated to their idols). They attributed these fabrications to Allah, falsely claiming that He had commanded them to do so.
The verse was revealed regarding those who buried their infant daughters alive, driven by the fear of poverty or the disgrace they imagined would come upon them through their daughters. They also invented religious prohibitions against certain livestock, claiming divine authority for their innovations.
Allah declares that such people have indeed gone far astray and were never among those who are rightly guided. They deviated from the straight path of truth, reason, and divine revelation. Their actions were not merely mistakes—they were catastrophic losses in this world and the Hereafter.
This verse establishes a fundamental principle: the authority to declare what is lawful (halal) and what is unlawful (haram) belongs exclusively to Allah alone. No individual, group, or society has the right to legislate religious rulings that contradict Allah’s clear commands. True guidance lies in submitting to Allah’s revealed law, while innovation and false attribution to Him lead only to ruin.
A Call to Reflection and Guidance:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse and let it awaken your heart. How tragic is the state of those who, in their ignorance, destroy the very blessings Allah has given them—whether it be their children, their wealth, or their intellect—and then dare to speak about Allah without knowledge!
Islam came to protect life, honor, and reason. It forbids all forms of injustice and ignorance, and it calls humanity to submit to the One True God, who knows what is best for His creation. The Quran repeatedly invites us to use our intellect, to seek knowledge, and to follow the guidance of the prophets.
Let this verse be a reminder that true success lies in obeying Allah and His Messenger, and that the greatest loss is to wander away from divine guidance while believing oneself to be on the right path. Embrace the light of the Quran, and you will find peace, purpose, and salvation in this life and the next.
