Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Yandhurūna": They wait/anticipate.
- "Baʿḍu Āyāti Rabbika": Some of the signs of your Lord — specifically referring to the major portents of the Hour, the greatest of which is the sun rising from the west.
- "Kasabat fī īmānihā khayran": Earned good deeds within her faith — meaning she had already performed righteous actions before that time.
Tafsir (Explanation):
What are these people waiting for after they have rejected the messengers and denied the Qur'an? Are they waiting for the angels to come and seize their souls at death? Or for your Lord to come for the final judgment on the Day of Resurrection? Or for some of the major signs of your Lord to appear — such as the sun rising from the west?
On the day when one of these great signs arrives, faith will no longer benefit anyone who had not believed before that moment. Neither will repentance be accepted from a believer who had not previously performed righteous deeds. This is because when the unseen becomes visible and certainty becomes overwhelming, faith is no longer a choice — it becomes a forced acknowledgment, and Allah does not accept coerced belief.
So tell them, O Messenger: Wait then! We too are waiting. We wait to see the outcome — who among you will be saved and who will be destroyed, who will be among the people of Paradise and who among the people of the Fire.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound warning wrapped in mercy. Allah is telling us that the door of repentance is open *now* — not tomorrow, not when we see the signs with our own eyes. The wise person seizes the opportunity while it exists, racing toward goodness before the door closes forever.
How beautiful is the religion of Islam that it constantly reminds us of the fleeting nature of this life and urges us toward what truly matters! Today, you can turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, and He will accept you with all His mercy. Today, every good deed you perform is recorded and rewarded. But when the sun rises from the west — a sign that is closer than we think — the time for choice will be over.
Do not be like those who wait until it is too late. Be among the foremost in goodness, racing toward your Lord's pleasure while the doors of opportunity remain wide open. For indeed, Allah loves those who hasten to Him with a repentant heart and a soul eager to do good.
