Key Words and Meanings:
- Akinna (أَكِنَّةً): Covers or veils placed over the heart, preventing understanding.
- Waqr (وَقْرًا): Heaviness or deafness in the ears, blocking sound from being perceived.
- Asatir (أَسَاطِيرُ): Legends, myths, or tales of the ancients—fables with no real substance.
Explanation of the Verse:
Among the disbelievers, there are those who come and listen to you, O Messenger, when you recite the Quran. Yet, their listening is futile—they gain nothing from it. Because of their stubbornness and deliberate rejection of the truth, Allah has placed coverings over their hearts so that they cannot grasp the meaning of the Quran, and He has put heaviness and deafness in their ears, preventing them from truly hearing and benefiting from the message. Even if they witness every kind of sign or miracle that proves your truthfulness, they still refuse to believe. And when they come to you to argue and dispute, those who have denied the truth say: "This Quran is nothing but the fables of the ancients—tales that have been passed down with no reality behind them."
This verse reveals the tragic state of those who close their minds and hearts to divine guidance. Their rejection is not due to a lack of evidence, but rather a deep-seated arrogance and love for their own desires. They hear the words, but their hearts are sealed; they see the signs, but their eyes are blind to the truth. Their argument is not based on reason, but on empty claims that dismiss the Quran as mere mythology.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder of the immense blessing you have: a heart that is open to the truth and ears that can receive the Quran with sincerity. Do not be like those who heard the words of Allah yet turned away in pride. The Quran is not a tale of the past—it is a living, eternal guidance that speaks to every generation, offering light, mercy, and salvation. Open your heart to it, and you will find in it the answers to your deepest questions and the peace that your soul longs for. Let not arrogance or stubbornness deprive you of the greatest treasure: the knowledge of your Creator and the path to His pleasure. Embrace the Quran, and let it transform your life, for it is the word of Allah—truth that never fades and a guide that never misleads.
