Key Words and Their Meanings:

They lied against themselves, meaning their false claims and excuses only harmed their own souls, not others.
It vanished, disappeared, or went astray from them.
What they used to fabricate or invent, referring to their false deities and the intercession they falsely attributed to them.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, all of humanity — with a call to reflect and observe: "Look!" This is not merely a command to see with the eyes, but to contemplate with the heart and mind. The scene is set in the Hereafter, when the polytheists who once worshipped idols and associated partners with Allah will stand before their Lord, and in a desperate attempt to escape accountability, they will swear by Allah that they were not polytheists. They will deny their own shirk (association of partners with Allah).

Allah then exposes their lie, saying: "Look how they lie against themselves!" Their denial does not deceive Allah, nor does it change the reality of their deeds. Rather, it is a lie that rebounds upon their own souls, deepening their loss and shame. The very gods they once worshipped, the idols they prayed to, and the intercessors they hoped would save them — all of these vanish from their sight. They are nowhere to be found, offering no help, no intercession, and no protection. The false hopes they had built their lives upon crumble into nothingness, leaving them utterly abandoned and alone in their moment of greatest need.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul: the falsehoods we cling to in this world — whether they are false deities, material wealth, status, or fleeting desires — will all prove to be illusions on the Day of Judgment. Only the truth of Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) and sincere devotion to Him will remain.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this scene with an open heart. How often do we deceive ourselves, thinking that our excuses will save us, or that the things we rely upon besides Allah will come to our aid? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder from your Lord: do not wait until the Day when all falsehoods are exposed. Turn to Allah now, sincerely, and place your trust in Him alone. He is the One who never abandons His sincere servants. The doors of repentance are open, and His mercy is vast. Do not let the illusions of this world distract you from the eternal truth — for only Allah remains, and everything besides Him will vanish, just as the false gods of the polytheists vanished when they needed them most. Embrace the pure faith of Islam, and you will find a peace and security that no falsehood can ever provide.

📜 Verse 22-26 — Al-An'am

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?"
Then there will be no [excuse upon] examination except they will say, "By Allah, our Lord, we were not those who associated."
See how they will lie about themselves. And lost from them will be what they used to invent.
And among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, "This is not but legends of the former peoples."
And they prevent [others] from him and are [themselves] remote from him. And they do not destroy except themselves, but they perceive [it] not.
