Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yanhawna 'anhu: They forbid others from him (the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) and from following the Qur'an.
- Yan'awna 'anhu: They keep themselves far away from him, distancing themselves from the truth.
- Yuhlikūn: They destroy (themselves).
- Wa mā yash'urūn: And they do not perceive or realize (the consequence of their actions).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah exposes the reality of the disbelievers who opposed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. These people had a dual approach of misguidance: they would actively prevent others from listening to the Prophet and from embracing the message of the Qur'an, while simultaneously keeping themselves far away from him. They neither allowed others to benefit from his guidance, nor did they seek to benefit themselves. They were, as described, both misleaders and misguided.
Yet, in their arrogance, they believed they were harming the Prophet and his mission. Allah clarifies the profound truth: they were not harming anyone but themselves. Every act of rejection, every attempt to block others from the path of Allah, only contributed to their own ruin and destruction. The evil consequences of their deeds would return upon them alone, not upon the believers or the Prophet. And the most astonishing part is that they were completely unaware of this reality — they could not perceive that their schemes were, in fact, the very instruments of their own downfall.
This verse carries a timeless lesson: those who strive against the truth, thinking they are protecting themselves or their interests, are in reality digging their own graves. The harm they intend for others rebounds upon them, while the truth remains victorious and protected by Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: no one who opposes the guidance of Allah ever succeeds in harming the religion — they only harm themselves. The history of humanity is filled with examples of tyrants and disbelievers who tried to extinguish the light of Allah, yet that light only grew brighter while they were consumed by their own actions.
This verse invites you to open your heart to the truth before you find yourself among those who are blind to their own loss. The Prophet ﷺ came with mercy and guidance for all of humanity. Do not be like those who turned away, preventing others and themselves from the greatest success. Embrace the Qur'an, follow the Sunnah, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. Allah has promised to protect His religion, and He has promised that those who strive against it will only destroy themselves — so be among the wise who perceive this truth before it is too late.
