Word Meanings:
- Fa'tarafoo – They admitted and confessed, acknowledging the truth against themselves.
- Bidhanbihim – Their sin, which here refers to their disbelief (kufr) and denial of the truth.
- Fasuḥqan – "So away with them!" or "May they be destroyed!" – a supplication of distancing and ruin.
- Li-aṣḥābi al-sa'īr – The companions of the Blazing Fire, i.e., those who are dwellers of Hell.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah describes the moment when the dwellers of Hell finally speak the truth about themselves. After a lifetime of arrogance, denial, and rejection of the messengers and their messages, they now stand before the reality of their deeds. They openly confess: "We were indeed among those who denied the truth." This confession, however, comes at a time when it is utterly useless — no repentance is accepted, no plea is heard, and no second chance is granted. Their admission only serves to confirm the justice of Allah's punishment upon them.
Then the Qur'an declares: "So away with the companions of the Blazing Fire!" — a powerful supplication of distancing and destruction. It is as if the universe itself joins in condemning them, pushing them far away from every trace of mercy, goodness, or hope. The word *suḥq* conveys the idea of being crushed, ground into dust, and utterly removed from any proximity to divine compassion.
This verse carries a profound lesson for us in this life: Confession of sin is only valuable when it leads to repentance before death. The people of Hell confessed, but their confession was too late. In this world, Allah opens the door of repentance wide — He loves when His servants admit their faults and turn back to Him. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than a man who finds his lost camel in a barren desert." So do not wait until the moment when confession brings no benefit. Seize this precious opportunity now, while the door of mercy is still open, and let your admission of sin be the beginning of a beautiful journey back to your Lord.
May Allah protect us from the fate of the companions of the Fire, and may He make us among those who confess their sins in this world with sincere repentance, so that we may be spared the humiliation of confession in the Hereafter. Ameen.
