Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghawran (غَوْرًا): Water that has sunk deep into the earth, disappearing from the surface and becoming unreachable.
  • Ma‘īn (مَعِينٍ): Flowing, visible water that is easily accessible, gushing forth or running on the surface of the earth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Say, O Messenger, to these polytheists who deny the power of Allah and reject His blessings: "Tell me—if your water were to sink deep into the earth, vanishing from sight and beyond your reach, with no means or technology to extract it, who other than Allah could bring you flowing, visible water that springs forth and quenches your thirst?" The answer is self-evident: no one but Allah alone. This verse is a profound reminder of humanity’s absolute dependence on Allah for the most basic necessity of life—water. It challenges the arrogant to reflect: if the very source of your survival were cut off, who could restore it? Only the One who created the heavens and the earth, who sends down rain from the sky and causes springs to gush from the ground.

This rhetorical question strikes at the heart of human helplessness. Water is the essence of life—Allah says in the Qur’an: "And We made from water every living thing" (21:30). Yet, how often do we take this blessing for granted? The verse invites us to pause and consider the fragility of our existence. If the water we drink today were to vanish tomorrow, all our wealth, technology, and power would be utterly useless. This is a call to humility and gratitude, reminding us that every sip of water is a gift from the Most Merciful.

Moreover, this verse serves as a powerful invitation to faith. It urges the disbelievers to use their intellect and observe the world around them. The continuous flow of rivers, the rain that revives barren lands, and the springs that burst forth from rocks—all are signs of Allah’s infinite power and care for His creation. When we recognize this, our hearts naturally incline toward gratitude and submission to the One who sustains us.

Dear reader, reflect on this: your life depends on water, and water depends on Allah. So, turn to Him with sincerity, thank Him for His countless blessings, and worship Him alone. For He is the One who says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (40:60). The door of mercy is always open—so why not knock? Indeed, in this verse lies a beautiful lesson: the One who brings water from the earth is the same One who brings life to hearts through guidance. Just as He revives dead land with rain, He revives dead hearts with the light of faith. Seek Him, and you will find that He is nearer to you than your own jugular vein.

Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered: whether Allah should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"
Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."
