Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fīhi (فِيهِ): In it — referring to the Book mentioned in the preceding verse.
- Takhayyarūn (تَخَيَّرُونَ): You choose or select — meaning whatever you desire and prefer for yourselves.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the rhetorical challenge posed to the disbelievers of Makkah who claimed that they would be treated equally with the believers in the Hereafter, and that their obedience and disobedience would amount to the same outcome. Allah asks them: Do you have a revealed scripture in which you study and find that the righteous and the wicked will receive the same reward? If such a book existed, then indeed you could claim that you will have in it whatever you choose and desire. But no such book exists, nor has Allah ever sent down such a teaching. On the contrary, every divine scripture affirms that the obedient will be rewarded and the disobedient will be punished.
The verse, therefore, demolishes their false hope and exposes the absurdity of their claim. It affirms that no heavenly book grants people whatever they wish without accountability. The justice of Allah requires that good and evil are not equal, and that every soul is recompensed according to its deeds.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse invites every human being to reflect on the fairness of Allah's system. Imagine a world where a person who does good and one who does evil receive the same end — that would be injustice, and Allah is far above any injustice. The Qur'an, unlike any other book, does not flatter people with empty promises; it tells the truth, even when it is hard. It calls you to choose the path of righteousness, and it assures you that your choice matters. So let this verse be a reminder: your deeds are not lost, your efforts are not wasted, and your Lord is the Most Just, who will give you exactly what you deserve — and even more, out of His infinite mercy, if you strive for His pleasure. Embrace the truth of the Qur'an, for it is the only Book that truly guarantees your success in this life and the next.
