📖 English Meaning
Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Aymān (أَيْمَانٌ): Oaths or sworn covenants.
  • Bālighah (بَالِغَةٌ): Reaching, firm, and fully binding.
  • Taḥkumūn (تَحْكُمُونَ): What you judge, decide, or wish for yourselves.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah addresses the disbelievers who rejected the Resurrection and the Hereafter, arguing that they would not be held accountable. Allah challenges them with a powerful rhetorical question: "Or do you have oaths from Us, reaching to the Day of Resurrection, that you will surely have whatever you judge for yourselves?"

The meaning is: Do you possess a binding covenant, confirmed by solemn oaths, that We have made with you—swearing that you will get everything you desire and decide for yourselves, with no reckoning or punishment? Such a claim is utterly false and impossible. No such promise was ever given to them. On the contrary, Allah has made it clear through His prophets and scriptures that every soul will be recompensed for its deeds, and that the Day of Judgment is an inevitable truth.

This verse exposes the arrogance of those who assume they can dictate their own fate without any divine authority. It reminds them—and all of humanity—that no one has a special guarantee from Allah except through faith, righteous action, and obedience to His commands. The Hereafter is a certainty, and no wishful thinking or baseless assumptions can change that reality.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth: Do not rely on false hopes or self-made assumptions about your salvation. Instead, turn to the One who created you, follow His guidance, and live a life that pleases Him. The doors of mercy are wide open for those who repent and believe, but they are closed to those who persist in denial and arrogance. Let this verse be a wake-up call—a gentle yet firm reminder that our deeds will be weighed, and our future in the Hereafter depends on how we live today. Embrace the truth while there is still time, and let your heart find peace in submission to the Almighty, who is Just, Merciful, and Ever-Watchful over all that we do.
