Word Meanings:
- Salhum (سَلْهُمْ): Ask them, i.e., the disbelievers who made such claims.
- Ayyuhum (أَيُّهُم): Which of them.
- Bidhālika (بِذَٰلِكَ): By that — referring to their claim that they will be treated in the Hereafter like the believers, or that they will receive the same reward.
- Zaʿīm (زَعِيمٌ): Guarantor, surety, or one who takes responsibility for a matter.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to pose a decisive question to the disbelievers of Makkah who claimed that they would be given the same honour and reward as the believers in the Hereafter. Allah says: *"Ask them, which of them will guarantee that?"* — meaning, who among them is willing to stand as a guarantor for such a claim? Who will take responsibility for the truth of what they assert?
The question is a powerful rhetorical challenge, exposing the emptiness of their words. They claimed that in the life to come, they would be favoured just as the believers would be, or even more so. Yet, they had no proof, no authority, and no one to vouch for them. No rational person would accept such a claim without evidence, and no one among them could step forward to guarantee it. This exposes the sheer baselessness of their position.
This verse is a profound lesson for all of humanity: every claim must be supported by proof. The disbelievers had no scripture, no divine message, and no rational argument to back their assertions. In contrast, the believers follow clear guidance from Allah, with promises confirmed by His truthful revelation.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply on the beauty of this Qur’anic challenge. It invites you to use your intellect and to demand evidence for matters of ultimate importance. Islam does not ask you to follow blindly; rather, it calls you to reflect, reason, and verify. The Qur’an repeatedly challenges its opponents to produce proof for their claims, while it itself stands as a living miracle — a book of unmatched eloquence, scientific accuracy, and timeless guidance.
If the disbelievers of Makkah could not find even one guarantor for their false hope, how much more secure are you when you place your trust in the promise of Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He has promised Paradise to those who believe and do righteous deeds, and His promise is true and certain. So embrace this truth with an open heart, and let the light of the Qur’an guide you to the straight path — the path of peace, justice, and eternal success.
