Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fajtabāhu (فَاجْتَبَاهُ): He chose him, selected him, and drew him close with special favor and honor.
- As-Ṣāliḥīn (الصَّالِحِينَ): The righteous ones — those whose intentions, words, and deeds are sound and upright; in this context, it refers to the rank of the prophets and the elite among Allah’s servants.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the Prophet Yunus (Jonah, peace be upon him) called out to his Lord from the depths of darkness — overwhelmed with grief and distress — and after he was cast out of the whale’s belly onto the barren shore, weak and blameworthy, Allah’s mercy overtook him. His Lord chose him, purified him, and honored him with His special selection. Allah accepted his repentance, restored his strength, and elevated him to the ranks of the righteous — those whose hearts are devoted to Allah, whose tongues speak truth, and whose deeds are pleasing to their Creator. This selection was not merely a return to his previous state; it was an elevation to a higher station of prophethood and closeness to Allah, making him a model of patience, repentance, and unwavering faith.
A Da’wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and heartwarming message for every believer: no matter how deep the darkness, how heavy the burden, or how severe the mistake, Allah’s mercy is greater. The story of Yunus (peace be upon him) teaches us that sincere repentance — turning to Allah with a broken heart and a truthful tongue — can transform disgrace into honor, and hardship into blessing. Allah does not abandon His servants; rather, He chooses those who turn back to Him and raises them to the highest ranks. So never despair of Allah’s mercy, and never underestimate the power of a sincere du’a in the depths of your trials. For the same Lord who chose Yunus from the belly of the whale is the Lord who hears your call today, and He is capable of making you from among His righteous servants — if only you turn to Him with a truthful heart. Let this be a source of hope and motivation: your past does not define your future; Allah’s selection and mercy can rewrite your destiny.
