Word Meanings:
- أَبْغِيكُمْ (Abghīkum): I seek or desire for you.
- إِلَٰهًا (Ilāhan): A deity or object of worship.
- فَضَّلَكُمْ (Faddalakum): He favored, honored, and elevated you above others.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a tone of gentle rebuke and profound astonishment. He says: "Should I seek for you a deity other than Allah, while He has favored you over the worlds?"
The context here is that the Children of Israel, after being saved from Pharaoh's tyranny and witnessing countless miracles, asked Moses to make for them a god to worship, as they had seen the polytheists around them worshipping idols. Moses responds with disbelief at their request, reminding them of the immense blessings Allah had bestowed upon them.
Moses is essentially saying: "How can you ask me to find you another object of worship when Allah, the One and Only, has already chosen you and elevated you above all the nations of your time?" This favor included sending numerous prophets from among them, saving them from the oppression of Pharaoh, parting the sea for them, providing them with manna and quails in the wilderness, and granting them dominion and power in the land after their enemies were destroyed.
The question is rhetorical, meant to awaken their consciousness and make them realize the absurdity of their request. Moses is not merely refusing their demand; he is inviting them to reflect on the greatness of Allah's favors and to recognize that no other being or object could ever deserve their worship, especially when they had witnessed firsthand the power and mercy of their true Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all believers. When we reflect on our own lives, we find countless blessings from Allah—our health, our families, our faith, and the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. How could we ever turn away from the One who created us, sustains us, and guides us to the straight path?
The beauty of Islam lies in its pure monotheism—worshipping Allah alone, without any partners. This is the essence of the testimony of faith (Lā ilāha illa Allah). When we submit to Allah alone, we free ourselves from the chains of false deities, whether they are idols of stone, wealth, power, or desires.
Let this verse inspire you to appreciate the greatest blessing of all: the blessing of Islam and the guidance to worship Allah alone. For indeed, Allah has honored the believers by calling them to His worship, and there is no honor greater than being a servant of the Most Merciful. So hold fast to this pure faith, and let your heart overflow with gratitude for the One who has favored you with the light of truth.
