Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Sayyi'at (السيئات): Evil deeds, sins, and misdeeds—including both disbelief (kufr) and acts of disobedience to Allah.
- Tābū (تابوا): They repented—turning back to Allah with sincere regret and a firm resolve to abandon sin.
- Ghafūr (غفور): Oft-Forgiving—He who veils sins and pardons them completely.
- Rahīm (رحيم): Most Merciful—He who showers His compassion and kindness upon His repentant servants.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse brings a message of immense hope and comfort to every soul that has stumbled in sin. Allah speaks of those who have committed evil deeds—whether the greatest sin of associating partners with Him (shirk) or other acts of disobedience—and then, after falling into that darkness, they turned back to their Lord in sincere repentance. They did not merely say "we repent" with their tongues; rather, their repentance was accompanied by true faith (īmān)—a faith that transforms their hearts and redirects their lives toward obedience and righteousness.
The verse emphasizes the sequence: sin first, then repentance, then faith. This shows that no matter how deep one has fallen, the door of Allah's mercy remains wide open. The phrase "from after it" (min ba'dihā) appears twice—once referring to repentance after the sins, and once referring to Allah's forgiveness after that repentance. This repetition highlights a beautiful reality: just as the servant turns to Allah after sinning, Allah turns to him with forgiveness and mercy after his repentance.
Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ directly—"indeed your Lord"—to emphasize certainty and to console the believers through him. The verse closes with two of Allah's most beautiful names: Al-Ghafūr (the Oft-Forgiving), meaning He conceals the sins of His servants and does not expose them, and Al-Rahīm (the Most Merciful), meaning He showers His grace upon them and welcomes them back into His fold as if they had never sinned.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear reader, let this verse be a beacon of hope in your darkest moments. No matter how many times you have fallen, no matter how heavy your sins may weigh upon your conscience—know that your Lord's mercy is vaster than your failures. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah says: 'O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you for what you have done, and I will not mind. O son of Adam, even if your sins were to reach the clouds of the sky, and then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you.'" (Tirmidhi)
Do not let Shaytan deceive you into despair. The very fact that you feel regret for your sins is a sign of faith stirring in your heart. Seize this moment—repent sincerely, renew your faith, and return to your Lord. He is not only ready to forgive; He is eager to shower you with His mercy. This is the beauty of Islam: the door of repentance never closes until the soul reaches its throat. So hurry to your Lord today, for He is Al-Ghafūr, Al-Rahīm—the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
