Word Meanings:

  • ʿAtaw (عَتَوْا): They transgressed, rebelled, and persisted in arrogance and stubbornness.
  • Khāsiʾīn (خَاسِئِينَ): Disgraced, humiliated, and driven away from all good—cast out with contempt.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse recounts a pivotal moment in the story of the Children of Israel who violated the sacred command regarding the Sabbath. Despite being explicitly prohibited from fishing on that day, a group among them arrogantly persisted in their disobedience, testing the limits of Allah’s law with pride and defiance. When their transgression reached its peak—when they no longer heeded warnings or lessons—Allah’s decree fell upon them: they were transformed into despicable, humiliated apes, stripped of their honor and cast away from every form of good.

This transformation was not merely physical but a profound sign of divine justice. It demonstrated that when a people abandon the guidance of their Lord and persist in sin with arrogance, they risk losing not only their moral standing but their very human dignity. The punishment was swift, decisive, and a lesson for all generations: Allah’s command is absolute, and when He wills something, He merely says "Be," and it is.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, this story is not just history—it is a mirror for every soul. It teaches us that disobedience, when coupled with arrogance, leads to ruin, while humility and repentance open the doors of mercy. The Qur’an presents this tale so that we may take heed: no one is above Allah’s law, and no sin is too great to be forgiven if one turns back sincerely before the decree falls. Let this be a call to examine our own hearts—are we quick to obey, or do we stubbornly cling to our desires? Allah’s mercy is vast, but His justice is certain. Embrace the path of submission today, and you will find peace in this life and the next. The door of repentance remains open until the moment comes when it is too late—so hasten to it, and let not pride be your undoing.

📜 Verse 164-168 — Al-A'raf

And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allah is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."
And when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].
