📖 English Meaning
And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

Announced and made it known with certainty and clarity.
Will surely send and appoint.
Will make them taste and suffer.
The worst and most severe form of punishment and humiliation.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Remember, O Messenger, when your Lord made a firm and unequivocal declaration — a promise that cannot be broken — that He would send upon the Jews, until the Day of Judgment, those who would inflict upon them the most severe punishment and humiliation. This was fulfilled when Allah sent Nebuchadnezzar and other oppressors against them, who destroyed their homes, killed their men, took their women and children as captives, and imposed upon the survivors the humiliation of paying the jizyah (tribute). This punishment was a direct consequence of their transgression, their breaking of covenants, and their rejection of Allah's messengers.

Indeed, your Lord is swift in punishment for those who deserve it due to their disbelief and disobedience — so much so that He may hasten their punishment in this very world before the Hereafter. Yet, at the same time, He is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful to those who turn back to Him in sincere repentance, who mend their ways, and who believe. His mercy encompasses them, and He erases their sins no matter how great they were.

This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity: Allah's justice is absolute, and His punishment is certain for those who persist in wrongdoing. But His mercy is even greater — the door of repentance is always open, and no sin is too great to be forgiven if one sincerely returns to Him. So do not despair of Allah's mercy, and do not be deceived by His patience, for He is both swift in punishment and abundant in forgiveness. Let this be a call to every soul to reflect, repent, and draw closer to the Most Merciful before the appointed time arrives.

📜 Verse 165-169 — Al-A'raf

And when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.
So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.
And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].
And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason?
