Word Meanings:

  • Āyah (آيَةٍ): A sign, miracle, or revelation from Allah.
  • Ijtabaytahā (اجْتَبَيْتَهَا): You fabricated it or invented it yourself.
  • Baṣā’ir (بَصَائِر): Clear proofs, insights, and evidences that illuminate the truth.
  • Hudā (هُدًى): Guidance that leads to the straight path.
  • Raḥmah (رَحْمَة): Mercy and compassion from Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the disbelievers of Makkah were presented with a sign or a verse from the Qur’an, they would either reject it or demand something else. But when no new verse came down for a period of time, they would mockingly say: “Why don’t you invent one yourself, O Muhammad? Why don’t you fabricate something to keep us entertained?” This was their arrogant and stubborn attitude—they were not seeking truth, but merely looking for excuses to disbelieve.

Allah, the Most High, commands His Messenger ﷺ to respond to them with a clear and dignified answer: “Say: I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord.” This means: I am not a fabricator, nor do I speak from my own desire. I am merely a servant who receives revelation from Allah, and I deliver it as it is. I have no authority to bring a sign on my own; the matter rests entirely with Allah, Who sends down what He wills, when He wills, and in the manner He wills.

Then Allah describes the Qur’an itself as the greatest sign and miracle: “This is insight from your Lord.” The Qur’an is not just any book—it is a collection of clear proofs and divine evidences that open the eyes of the heart and lead to the truth. It is “guidance and mercy for a people who believe.” For those who have faith, the Qur’an is a light that illuminates their path, a source of mercy that brings them peace, and a guide that leads them to success in this life and the Hereafter. As for those who reject it, they remain in darkness and loss.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, contemplate the beauty of this verse. The Prophet ﷺ was not a poet, nor a soothsayer, nor a fabricator—he was an honest, trustworthy man who delivered exactly what Allah revealed to him. The Qur’an itself is the living miracle that continues to guide humanity to this very day. Its proofs are clear, its guidance is perfect, and its mercy encompasses all who embrace it with sincere faith.

So open your heart to this divine light. Let the Qur’an be your guide, your companion, and your source of mercy. For indeed, in it lies the answer to every question, the cure for every ailment, and the path to eternal happiness. Do not be like those who demanded signs yet closed their eyes to the greatest sign of all—the Book of Allah, which speaks to every generation until the end of time. Embrace it, believe in it, and you will find peace in this world and salvation in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 201-205 — Al-A'raf

Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.
But their brothers - the devils increase them in error; then they do not stop short.
And when you, [O Muhammad], do not bring them a sign, they say, "Why have you not contrived it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This [Qur'an] is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."
So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.
And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
