Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ — Listen attentively and with full focus to the recitation.
- وَأَنصِتُوا — Remain silent, refrain from speaking or making noise.
- لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ — So that you may receive Allah’s mercy.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse establishes a profound etiquette for Muslims whenever the Qur’an is recited. When the words of Allah are being read aloud, every believer is commanded to do two things: listen with complete attention and remain silent. This is not merely a suggestion—it is a divine directive that reflects the immense sanctity of the Qur’an.
The command applies in contexts such as the Friday sermon (khutbah), the congregational prayer when the imam recites aloud, and any gathering where the Qur’an is being recited. The wisdom behind this instruction is that true benefit from the Qur’an can only be attained when the heart is present and the mind is free from distractions. By listening attentively and keeping silent, a person is able to reflect upon the verses, understand their meanings, and allow them to penetrate the heart.
The verse concludes with the phrase “so that you may receive mercy” — a beautiful incentive that links this act of reverence to Allah’s boundless compassion. When a servant humbles himself before the words of his Lord, listens with sincerity, and refrains from idle talk, he opens the door to divine mercy. This mercy brings with it guidance, tranquility, forgiveness, and success in this life and the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, consider the immense honor Allah has bestowed upon you: He has spoken to you through His Book, and He asks only that you pause, listen, and be still. In a world filled with noise and constant distraction, this verse invites you to a moment of sacred connection with your Creator. When you hear the Qur’an, let your heart soften, let your tongue be silent, and let your soul be present. This is the path to mercy—a mercy that will illuminate your life, ease your burdens, and draw you closer to Allah. Make it a habit to honor the Qur’an with your full attention, and you will find that its words transform your heart and guide your steps toward eternal success.
