Word Meanings:

  • Hamīm (حَمِيمٌ): A close, intimate friend or a near relative who shares deep affection and concern for the other.
  • Yas’al (يَسْأَلُ): To ask, inquire, or seek information about someone's condition or affairs.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that terrifying Day of Judgment, when the heavens are split, the mountains become like scattered dust, and the skies melt like molten metal, every soul will be consumed by its own overwhelming fear and anxiety. In that state of utter panic and self-absorption, a close friend will not ask about his close friend, nor will a relative inquire about his relative's well-being. The bonds of love, kinship, and friendship—which in this worldly life would naturally prompt one to ask, "How are you? What has happened to you?"—will be completely severed by the sheer terror of the moment. Each person will be so engulfed in his own fate and the weight of his own deeds that he will have no capacity, no attention, and no heart left to care for anyone else, even those dearest to him.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the isolation and helplessness that will overwhelm humanity on that Day. It serves as a powerful reminder that the ties we cling to in this world—family, friends, and loved ones—will offer no comfort or assistance when the Hour arrives. Every person will stand alone before their Lord, accountable for what they have sent forth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this stark image is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken your heart to the reality that lies ahead. If even the closest of friends will forget one another on that Day, then what will save you is not the love of people, but your own relationship with your Creator. The Quran invites you, here and now, to invest in what will truly benefit you when no one else can—your faith, your righteous deeds, and your sincere repentance. Today, you have the chance to be the one who asks about others, who cares for the needy, who mends broken hearts, and who turns to Allah in humility. These are the deeds that will stand by you when all else falls away. Do not wait until that Day when you will wish you had asked yourself: "What have I prepared for this moment?" The door of mercy is wide open now—so come to Allah before the Day when no friend can ask about a friend, and no soul can help another.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Ma'arij

8يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,
9وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ
And the mountains will be like wool,
10وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
11يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
12وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ
And his wife and his brother
