Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ (Yubassaroonahum): They will be made to see one another; they will recognize each other clearly.
  • يَوَدُّ (Yawaddu): He will wish or desire intensely.
  • الْمُجْرِمُ (Al-Mujrim): The criminal, the sinner, the one who persisted in disbelief and wrongdoing.
  • يَفْتَدِي (Yaftadi): To ransom oneself, to offer something in exchange for freedom.
  • بِبَنِيهِ (Bibaneeh): With his sons (his own children).

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, Allah will make every person see and recognize their relatives, friends, and loved ones clearly — yet despite this mutual recognition, no one will be able to help another. The terror and horror of that Day will be so overwhelming that every soul will be consumed with its own salvation.

At that moment, the criminal — the one who rejected faith and persisted in sin — will desperately wish that he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by offering his own sons as a sacrifice. He would give up the dearest people to him — his own flesh and blood — just to escape the torment that awaits him. This shows the extreme severity of the punishment and the depth of regret that will overwhelm the wrongdoers, a regret that will come too late.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the isolation and selfishness that will grip humanity on that Day. The bonds of family, friendship, and kinship — which were so cherished in this world — will become meaningless. Everyone will be focused solely on saving themselves, even if it means sacrificing those they loved most.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine a day so terrifying that a father would willingly offer his own children to be punished in his place. This is not a scene from a horror story — it is the reality that the Qur'an describes with absolute certainty. The One who created you and knows your heart is warning you out of His infinite mercy, so that you may never reach that state of desperation.

Today, while you still have time, while your heart still beats and your breath continues, the door of repentance is wide open. Allah, the Most Merciful, says in His Book: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins'" (Az-Zumar 39:53).

Do not wait until that Day when you would trade your own children to escape punishment. Instead, turn to your Lord now, with a sincere heart, and He will transform your sins into good deeds. The same hands that could have been offered as a ransom will instead be raised in prayer. The same eyes that will witness that terror can today weep in humility before their Creator.

Islam is not a religion of fear alone — it is a religion of hope, mercy, and salvation. The very verse that warns us of this terrifying scene is followed by glad tidings for those who believe and do righteous deeds. So seize this moment. Your Lord is waiting for you with open arms of forgiveness. Do not let the whisperer (Shaytan) convince you that you are too far gone — for Allah's mercy encompasses everything.

The choice is yours: will you be among those who recognize their Lord today and find peace, or among those who recognize the truth only when it is too late? The wise one is he who learns from the warnings of others, not the one who waits to be the example of warning himself.
