And the mountains will be like wool,
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jibal (الْجِبَالُ): The mountains, the firm and massive structures of the earth.
  • Al-'Ihn (الْعِهْنِ): Dyed wool, specifically wool that has been colored and then carded or fluffed until it becomes light and scattered, easily blown away by the wind.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day—the Day of Resurrection—the mountains, which in this worldly life appear so solid, immovable, and towering, will undergo a complete transformation. They will become like dyed wool that has been carded and fluffed, so light and loose that the wind scatters it in every direction. Just as colored wool loses its cohesion and becomes soft, weightless fibers drifting apart, so too will the mountains lose their firmness and solidity. They will be crushed, pulverized, and turned into floating dust particles, no longer able to stand firm or provide any stability. This imagery emphasizes the total upheaval of the natural order—what seemed permanent and unshakable will become fragile and transient, subject to the absolute power of Allah, Who created it and will destroy it with a single command.

This description serves as a powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of this world. The mountains, which humans often view as symbols of strength and eternity, will be reduced to nothing more than scattered wool fibers. Nothing in this creation is permanent except Allah Himself. Therefore, the believer is urged to reflect: if the mightiest structures of the earth can be turned into dust in an instant, then how much more should we prioritize our relationship with our Creator over attachment to worldly matters? Let this verse awaken the heart to prepare for that inevitable Day, when every soul will be held accountable for its deeds. Seek refuge in Allah’s mercy now, before that Day arrives when no mountain can shield you and no strength can save you—only faith and righteous actions will be your companions.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Al-Ma'arij

7وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا
But We see it [as] near.
8يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,
9وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ
And the mountains will be like wool,
10وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
11يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
