Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yatma'u (أَيَطْمَعُ): To aspire, hope, or desire eagerly — here it carries a tone of unrealistic expectation.
  • Imri' (امْرِئ): A man/person — referring to each individual among the disbelievers.
  • Jannata Na'eem (جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ): The Garden of Delight — Paradise, described as a place of perpetual bliss and abundant blessings.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse poses a profound rhetorical question, challenging the false hopes of those who rejected the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the message of truth. After describing how these disbelievers rush toward the Prophet out of curiosity and mockery, gathering around him in scattered groups, the Quran exposes the contradiction in their hearts: "Does every one of them aspire to be admitted into the Garden of Delight?"

The question is not a genuine inquiry but a rebuke — a piercing exposure of their delusion. These very people who deny the Resurrection, mock the revelation, and persist in their arrogance and disbelief, still entertain the fantasy that they will enter Paradise. Some of them even boasted: "If there is an afterlife and a Paradise, we will surely be its people, for God has given us wealth and children in this world — proof of His favor upon us." They mistook worldly provision for divine approval, and their material blessings for a guarantee of eternal reward.

The verse demolishes this illusion. How can one who rejects the very path to Paradise — faith and righteous deeds — expect to reach its gates? Paradise is not a prize for wishful thinking, nor a reward for lineage or wealth. It is the abode of those who purify their souls, believe in the unseen, and live in obedience to their Creator. The disbelievers were created from a humble drop of fluid, just like all of humanity, and they know this well. Yet they refused to believe, so from where would they earn the honor of entering the Garden of Delight?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder: What is your own hope? Do you wish for Paradise while neglecting its requirements? The doors of Paradise are open, but they are entered through faith, sincerity, and righteous action — not through empty wishes or false pride. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Paradise is surrounded by hardships, and the Hellfire is surrounded by desires." So let your hope be accompanied by effort, and your aspiration by action. Do not be like those who desired the reward but rejected the path. Indeed, Allah is Most Merciful, and He accepts those who turn to Him with a sincere heart — so turn to Him now, before the opportunity slips away, and let your hope be a true and living hope that transforms your life and secures your place in the Garden of Delight.
