Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAn al-yamīn — from the right side (of the Prophet ﷺ)
- ʿAn al-shimāl — from the left side
- ʿIzīn — scattered groups and circles; the plural of ʿizah, meaning a band or company of people gathered together
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse continues to describe the state of the disbelievers who rush toward you, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with outstretched necks and fixed gazes, gathering around you from the right and from the left in scattered circles and separate companies. They come not to listen and benefit, but to mock, to argue, and to express their astonishment and denial. They surround you in fragmented groups, each clique turning away from the truth you bring, heedless of the Book of Allah and its call.
This scene is one of arrogance and heedlessness — people who have no true purpose in their approach, only empty curiosity and stubborn rejection. Yet despite this attitude, some of them even aspire to enter the Gardens of Delight! How can they hope for such a reward while they turn away from the path that leads to it? Allah, the Exalted, reminds them that He created them from a humble fluid, like all of humanity, and gave them the same faculties of reason and understanding — yet they refused to believe. So from where do they presume to deserve the everlasting bliss of Paradise?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound scene. These people surrounded the Prophet ﷺ with their bodies but their hearts were far away. They saw the truth with their own eyes yet turned from it in arrogance. How many of us today are similar? We attend gatherings of knowledge, we hear the Qur'an recited, we see the signs of Allah everywhere — yet our hearts remain distracted, our minds preoccupied, and our actions far from obedience.
The Qur'an invites you to be different. When you approach the truth, approach it with sincerity and an open heart. Do not be like those who came in circles of mockery and left in circles of loss. The door of Paradise is open for those who believe and do righteous deeds — not for those who merely wish without action. Allah created you with the ability to know Him, to worship Him, and to earn His pleasure. Do not let your share be like that of those who surrounded the Prophet ﷺ with their bodies but were absent in their hearts.
Come to the Qur'an with humility, and you will find in it a light that guides you to the best of this world and the Hereafter. The same Allah who created you from a humble drop has honored you with intellect and choice — so choose the path that leads to His eternal pleasure, and you will never regret it.
