Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wadd, Suwa', Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr — These are the names of five idols that the people of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) worshipped instead of Allah. They were originally the names of righteous men who lived before them; after their death, Satan inspired their people to erect statues in their memory, which over time became objects of worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah informs us of the desperate plea made by the leaders of disbelief among the people of Nuh (peace be upon him). When Prophet Nuh called them to worship Allah alone and abandon their false deities, they responded with stubbornness and defiance, commanding their followers: "Do not abandon your gods! Do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwa', nor Yaghuth, nor Ya'uq, nor Nasr!"

These five idols were the most revered and prominent among their many false gods. The leaders singled them out because they held the greatest influence over the people. They urged their followers to cling to them at all costs, fearing that if they let go of these idols, they would lose their social status, their traditions, and the very fabric of their society built upon shirk (polytheism).

This verse reveals the depth of their arrogance and their refusal to submit to the truth. They preferred the darkness of ignorance and blind following over the light of guidance brought by the Messenger of Allah. Their leaders were not merely misguided themselves—they actively worked to prevent others from embracing the truth, using their wealth, status, and rhetoric to mislead the masses.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How tragic is the state of those who cling to falsehood while the truth is presented to them so clearly! These people had a prophet among them—a man chosen by Allah, patient and wise—yet they chose to follow the whispers of Satan and the traditions of their forefathers.

This story serves as a powerful reminder for us today: we must never blindly follow the customs of our society or the pressures of our peers when they contradict the guidance of Allah and His Messenger. The idols of our time may not be statues of stone, but they can be wealth, status, fame, or unchecked desires that distract us from worshipping Allah alone.

Let us learn from the people of Nuh and be among those who respond to the call of truth with humility and submission. Let us purify our hearts from all forms of shirk—both the obvious and the hidden—and hold firmly to the rope of Allah. For the One who saved Nuh and the believers in the ark is the same Allah who is capable of saving us from every trial and difficulty, if only we turn to Him sincerely.

And let us remember: the greatest victory is not in preserving our worldly traditions, but in preserving our faith and our connection with our Creator. May Allah make us among those who hear the call of truth and respond to it with love and obedience.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Nuh

Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.
And they conspired an immense conspiracy.
And said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or Suwa' or Yaghuth and Ya'uq and Nasr.
And already they have misled many. And, [my Lord], do not increase the wrongdoers except in error."
Because of their sins they were drowned and put into the Fire, and they found not for themselves besides Allah [any] helpers.
