Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Makara (مَكَرُوا): They plotted, schemed, or devised a plan with deceit and cunning.
  • Makran (مَكْرًا): A plot or scheme.
  • Kubbāran (كُبَّارًا): Great, immense, or enormous — emphasizing the magnitude and severity of the plot.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The verse describes the leaders of Prophet Nuh's (Noah, peace be upon him) people, who were the chiefs of disbelief and arrogance. These leaders did not merely reject the truth passively — they actively and aggressively plotted against Nuh and his message. Their scheme was not small or trivial; it was colossal in its wickedness and deception. They conspired to mislead their followers, to spread lies about Nuh, and to prevent people from listening to the call of monotheism (Tawhid).

Their plot was "kubbāran" — a word that conveys something far beyond ordinary deceit. It was a scheme of immense proportions, built upon stubbornness, pride, and a deep-seated hostility toward the truth. They used every tool at their disposal: spreading false accusations, inciting the masses against Nuh, and reinforcing the idolatrous practices of their forefathers. They even went so far as to instruct their followers never to abandon their false gods — Wadd, Suwā', Yaghūth, Ya'ūq, and Nasr — which were originally the names of righteous men whose images were later turned into idols by the whispers of Satan.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the enemies of truth throughout history have always resorted to grand conspiracies and relentless opposition. Yet, despite the enormity of their plots, their schemes ultimately failed against the will of Allah. The Qur'an tells us that their end was destruction — they were drowned in the flood and cast into the Fire, with no helper or protector besides Allah.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this: the mightiest plots of arrogant tyrants are nothing before the power of Allah. When you face opposition in your path toward truth and righteousness, remember that no matter how "kubbāran" (enormous) the schemes against you may be, Allah's plan is greater. The believers are called to remain steadfast, patient, and trusting in Allah, just as Nuh did for 950 years. His unwavering faith and perseverance were rewarded with victory, while the plotters met a humiliating end.

Let this verse strengthen your heart: if you are on the path of Allah, no plot, no conspiracy, and no power on earth can stand against His decree. Hold firm to your faith, and let the example of Nuh inspire you to never give up — for the final victory always belongs to the righteous.
