Word Meanings:

  • "Wa mahhadtu" (وَمَهَّدتُّ): I made smooth, facilitated, and paved the way.
  • "Lahu tamheedan" (لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا): For him a thorough, complete facilitation — meaning I expanded and eased his circumstances extensively.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the description of the arrogant disbeliever whom Allah created alone in his mother's womb, with no wealth or children at that time. Then Allah granted him vast wealth, children who remained present with him in Makkah, and a long, comfortable life. Here, Allah states: "And I paved the way for him smoothly and extensively" — meaning I made his path in life easy, expanded his provisions, prolonged his days, and granted him abundant offspring and comfort. This was not out of love for him, but as a gradual test and a means of increasing his accountability. The verse refers specifically to al-Waleed ibn al-Mughirah, a staunch enemy of the truth who fought against Allah and His Messenger. Yet, despite all this divine generosity, he remained ungrateful and defiant.

Reflection and Da'wah:

Dear reader, reflect on the profound lesson here: Allah, the Most Merciful, gives worldly blessings to both the righteous and the wicked. Wealth, children, and comfort are not always signs of divine pleasure — they can be tests of gratitude and obedience. The one who receives such favors yet uses them to oppose the truth only deepens his own ruin. How many people today enjoy health, wealth, and status, yet spend it all in disobedience to their Creator? Let this verse awaken you: every blessing you possess is a trust from Allah, and you will be asked about how you used it. Do not let the sweetness of this world make you forget the bitterness of standing before your Lord. Be among those who, when given, give thanks; when tested, remain patient; and when called to the truth, respond with humility and submission. For the true success is not in the abundance of this world, but in the peace of the Hereafter — and that is only attained through faith and righteous deeds.
