Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ثُمَّ (Thumma): Here it denotes sequential order with a sense of rebuke and astonishment—"then, despite all this..."
- يَطْمَعُ (Yatma'u): He covets, desires eagerly, and aspires with greed.
- أَنْ أَزِيدَ (An Azida): That I (Allah) should increase him—i.e., add more to his wealth, children, and worldly blessings.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narrative about a specific person—identified in the authentic sources of interpretation as al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah—who was given immense worldly favors by Allah. He was born alone, without wealth or status, yet Allah granted him abundant riches, sons who remained present with him in Makkah, and made every path of comfort and ease accessible to him.
Yet, despite all these blessings, he chose to reject the truth and stubbornly oppose the Qur'an and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And then—astonishingly—he dares to covet even more. He hopes that Allah will increase his wealth and children, all while he remains in a state of ingratitude and disbelief.
This is the height of arrogance and delusion: to receive generously from the hand of Allah, then to turn away in defiance, and still expect further favors. The verse exposes this flawed logic with divine severity. Allah declares that such a person will not receive any increase; rather, his fate is one of severe hardship and unrelenting punishment, because he used the very blessings given to him as weapons against the One who bestowed them.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: how often do we receive countless blessings from Allah—health, wealth, family, comfort—and yet forget the Giver? How often do we ask for more while failing to show gratitude for what we already have?
This verse is a timeless reminder that ingratitude is not merely a missed opportunity for thanks—it is a dangerous path that leads to loss. The one who is given much and still rebels against his Creator is not worthy of more; rather, he risks losing everything, both in this world and the next.
But the door of repentance is always open. If you find yourself in a state of heedlessness, know that Allah is Most Merciful and Most Forgiving. He loves those who turn back to Him with sincere hearts. Do not be like the one who demands more while rejecting the truth—be instead among those who recognize every blessing as a trust from Allah, who use their wealth, their children, and their comfort to draw closer to Him, and who understand that true increase lies not in worldly accumulation but in the peace of a heart connected to its Lord.
Let this verse inspire you to count your blessings, to thank Allah abundantly, and to submit to His guidance with humility. For the one who is grateful, Allah promises even more—not just in this life, but in the eternal bliss of Paradise.
