Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Saqar — This is one of the names of Hellfire, given to emphasize its intense heat and scorching nature. The word itself carries a sense of burning and searing.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning that a certain type of person will be cast into Saqar, the Qur'an poses a profound rhetorical question: *"And what will make you realize what Saqar is?"*

This is a style of expression used in the Qur'an to magnify the severity and terror of something beyond human comprehension. It is as if to say: O Muhammad, and O all of humanity — you have no true perception of what this Hellfire really is. Your minds cannot grasp its reality, your imaginations cannot picture its horrors, and your experiences in this world — even with the most searing fire you have ever felt — give you no more than a faint shadow of its true nature.

The question is not seeking an answer; rather, it is a declaration that the answer is beyond the reach of human knowledge. It is a way of saying that Saqar is so dreadful, so severe, and so unimaginable that even if all the wise men of the world gathered to describe it, they would fail. The Prophet ﷺ himself, despite his lofty rank, is told that he cannot fully know what it is — so how could anyone else?

This verse instills awe and fear in the hearts of believers, reminding them of the reality that awaits those who reject the truth and persist in sin. It is a call to take the warnings of the Qur'an seriously, to turn back to Allah in repentance, and to strive in obedience before that Day arrives when no excuse will be accepted.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. If Allah describes His own punishment in such terms — that even the Prophet ﷺ cannot fully comprehend it — then how cautious should we be in our lives? How careful should we be in guarding our prayers, our tongues, our eyes, and our deeds?

The good news is that the same Qur'an that warns us of Saqar also tells us of Paradise, whose joys are likewise beyond human imagination — "No soul knows what comfort has been hidden for them as a reward for what they used to do" (As-Sajdah: 17). So do not despair of Allah's mercy, but do not be complacent about His punishment either. Strive for the eternal bliss, and save yourself from the fire whose reality no mind can grasp.
