Word Meanings:

  • لَا تُبْقِي (Lā Tubqī): Does not leave anything remaining or spared.
  • وَلَا تَذَرُ (Wa Lā Tadhar): And does not leave anything behind or forsake it; meaning it spares nothing at all.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the terrifying nature of Hellfire (Saqar) in a way that strikes awe into every heart. Allah says that this Fire "does not spare and does not leave" — meaning it consumes everything utterly, leaving nothing untouched. It devours the flesh, burns the skin, and destroys the bones; nothing remains except that the Fire has seized it and annihilated it. Yet, by the will of Allah, the punishment is continuous and renewed: the skin is burned, then restored, only to be burned again, and the cycle repeats endlessly. This is not a single destruction but an eternal, ever-renewing torment that never ceases and never shows mercy.

The verse paints a vivid picture of the absolute severity of Hell — a place where there is no respite, no partiality, and no escape. It is a Fire that does not discriminate, does not relent, and does not spare any part of the body from its scorching heat. This description serves as a powerful warning to humanity: the consequences of turning away from the truth are real and unimaginably severe.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. If the Fire of this world can cause such pain, how much greater is the Fire of the Hereafter — a Fire that never spares and never leaves? Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the Qur'an and the guidance of His Prophet ﷺ to show us the path of safety. He has opened the doors of repentance and forgiveness, and He loves for His servants to return to Him. Do not delay; every moment is an opportunity to turn back to Allah, to seek His pardon, and to strive in good deeds. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The Fire is surrounded by desires, and Paradise is surrounded by hardships" (Bukhari and Muslim). So be patient in obedience, avoid what Allah has forbidden, and race toward His mercy. Indeed, Allah is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He does not wish for His servants to be destroyed — but He is also Just, and His justice demands that the truth be upheld. Choose the path of salvation today, before the Day comes when no soul can intercede for another, and when the Fire will say: "Is there any more?" (Qaf: 30). May Allah protect us all from the Fire and grant us the highest ranks of Paradise.
