📖 English Meaning
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No, indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It serves to reject and dismiss the previous claim or proposal entirely.
  • Lā yakhāfūna (لَّا يَخَافُونَ): "They do not fear" — indicating an absence of both dread and reverent awareness.
  • Al-Ākhirah (الْآخِرَةُ): The Hereafter — encompassing death, the resurrection, the Day of Judgment, Paradise, and Hellfire.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) delivers a decisive and emphatic response to the stubborn disbelievers who had insolently demanded that a book be sent down to them directly from heaven, or that some spectacular sign be produced for them personally. They claimed they would only believe if such a thing occurred.

Allah refutes this demand outright: "No, indeed!" — meaning, it is not as they imagine, and their demand is not a genuine quest for truth. Rather, the real reason behind their persistent rejection and arrogance is that they do not fear the Hereafter. They do not truly believe in the resurrection, nor in the reckoning, nor in the punishment of Hellfire. Had they possessed even a shred of genuine fear of the Day of Judgment and its consequences, they would never have dared to make such insolent demands after the clear proofs and miracles had already been established through the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Their hearts are devoid of that awe which would restrain them from disbelief and drive them toward faith.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the root of much disobedience and arrogance lies in a weak connection with the Hereafter. When a person truly internalizes the reality of that Day — when they stand before their Lord, when their deeds are weighed, when the Fire blazes and Paradise draws near — their entire perspective transforms. They begin to prioritize what truly matters, they hasten to repentance, and they treat every moment as precious.

So let us ask ourselves: Do we truly fear the Hereafter? Do we live as though that Day is certain and near? The believer who keeps the Hereafter alive in their heart finds sweetness in obedience, ease in patience, and strength in resisting temptation. Let this verse be a gentle yet firm reminder to reconnect our hearts with the ultimate reality — for whoever fears the Day of Account will find, on that very Day, a reward beyond imagination and a security that never ends. May Allah make us among those who fear Him in secret and in public, and who meet Him with hearts full of faith and hope.
