Surah Al-Muddaththir — Verse 6

Word Meanings:

• Tamanun (تَمْنُن): Derived from *al-Mann*, which means to give a gift or favor, or to bestow something while expecting a return or repayment. It can also carry the sense of reminding someone of a favor done for them.
• Tastakthir (تَسْتَكْثِر): Means to seek more, to desire an increase, or to expect a greater return in exchange for what was given.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a profound ethical and spiritual directive, and by extension, it guides every believer who seeks to live a life of sincerity and devotion. The verse commands: "And do not confer a favor to acquire more" — meaning, do not give of your wealth, time, or effort with the intention of receiving a greater reward or benefit in return from the recipient, whether that be material gain, praise, or a reciprocal favor.

The verse carries two complementary interpretations, both rooted in the authentic understanding of the scholars:

First, it means: Do not give a gift or do a favor while keeping a mental ledger, expecting the recipient to repay you with something larger. Such an attitude tarnishes the purity of giving and reduces it to a transactional exchange rather than an act of sincere generosity. The believer is called to give freely, seeking only the pleasure of Allah, not the gratitude or compensation of people.

Second, it means: Do not remind your Lord of your deeds, thinking that your acts of worship or charity are so great that they place Him in your debt. No matter how much good a person does, it can never equal the infinite blessings Allah has already bestowed. A servant should never feel that their obedience is a favor to Allah; rather, it is a favor from Allah that He enabled them to do good at all. The believer must remain humble, recognizing that even their best efforts are but a drop in the ocean of Allah's mercy.

This verse beautifully teaches the essence of *ikhlas* (sincerity) — the purification of one's intentions. When you give, give for Allah alone. When you worship, worship with humility. When you serve, serve without expecting anything in return from creation. This is the path of the righteous, who understand that true generosity is that which is hidden from the eyes of people and known only to the All-Seeing Lord.

When you pray and fast, do not feel that Allah owes you anything; rather, thank Him for granting you the ability to worship. This is the way of the prophets and the truthful ones — a way that brings peace to the soul and draws you closer to the Most Merciful. Let your giving be a reflection of Allah's own generosity, and let your humility be a reflection of your awareness of His greatness.
