Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- تُتْلَىٰ (tutlā): Recited or read aloud.
- آيَاتُنَا (āyātunā): Our verses/signs — referring to the Qur’anic revelations.
- أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ (asāṭīru l-awwalīn): Legends/fables of the ancients — i.e., tales and stories written down by past nations.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the verses of the Qur’an are recited to these disbelievers — who have hardened their hearts against the truth — they respond out of arrogance and stubbornness, saying: “We have heard such things before. If we wanted, we could produce something like this ourselves.” They claim that what Muhammad (peace be upon him) recites is nothing but ancient myths and fables of bygone peoples, not a divine revelation.
This was the attitude of leaders like al-Nadr ibn al-Hārith, who traveled to distant lands and heard tales of Persian and Roman heroes. When he heard the Qur’an, he dismissed it as mere storytelling, thinking that his own knowledge of foreign legends could rival the words of Allah. But in truth, his claim was hollow — for no one, not even the most eloquent of Arabs, could produce a single chapter like the Qur’an, let alone the whole of it. Their words were not born of genuine reflection, but of pride and a refusal to submit to the truth.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
How strange is the state of one who hears the Qur’an — a book that has challenged humanity for over fourteen centuries to produce even one chapter like it, and none has succeeded — and still calls it “fables of the ancients”! If these disbelievers truly believed their own claim, why did they not rise to the challenge and bring forth something comparable? The answer is clear: they could not, and they knew it. Their words were a shield for their pride, not a sincere argument.
Dear reader, let this verse be a reminder to you: the Qur’an is not a book of stories from the past, but a living guidance for every generation. Its words heal hearts, illuminate minds, and transform lives. Do not let arrogance or habit blind you to its beauty. Open your heart to it, and you will find that it speaks directly to your soul — because it comes from the One who created you and knows what is best for you. The Qur’an is not a tale of the ancients; it is the eternal word of the Living God, sent as a mercy to all of humanity. Will you not listen with an open heart?
